Cardio Session Blog

Name: Triathlon
Duration: 420 min
Note: Did my first half ironman - boy was this super hard. I totally under estimated the humidity in Hawaii. Did not take my salt pills and paid for it on the run. I made it through the swim (for me the was the hardest part) I was sure I would not make the cut off. I finished with a smile so I guess it was not all bad :)

Training Ride

Ok, well I did my ride in Kona for half ironman in May that I will be competing in. The ride was harder than I thought it would be, it was hot, humid and very windy. I made it but the last 5 miles were very tough and I thought I would not make it.

I guess I have a lot of training to do on the bike. Have to get more hours and miles logged each week in order to do that ride easier.

While we were in Kona we watched our friend compete in the Ford Ironman Championships. It was a great event and I got to see Chrissy Wellington break the course record - she is awesome.

Congratulations to Elliott and Chris for a great job!

Ironman 70.3 Hawaii

Well, my husband did his 70.3 Ironman in Hawaii on May 30th. This was his 2nd time there. His time was 45 minutes better than last years time and he qualified for Clearwater Florida Championships in November. He had a great race - did very well even in the heat and the tough run.

He will be doing a full Ironman on June 21st in Coeur d'Alene Idaho. This will be a very challenging and long day for him but I know he will do great. He is in such good shape and great physical condition.

CONGRATULATIONS GREG! GREAT JOB

Nutrition

It’s not just what you eat, but how you buy, prepare – even think about food that can have an impact on your stress levels. These tips should go far to eliminate meal-related stress.

Avoid emotional eating
If you’re like many women who respond to stress by craving (and indulging in) fatty, carby comfort food, you’re not alone but you do need to think about an alternative. “Maybe it’s taking a walk around the block or taking a couple of deep breaths and not using food as the stress reliever,” offers Kerry Neville, registered dietician and spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association.

CRUNCH TIME: Munch an apple, celery or carrots. Simply crunching these foods will help get some of your anxiety out without packing on the pounds.

Plan ahead
This may seem obvious, but planning a week’s menu can make that week run much more smoothly. “I sit down on Saturday or Sunday and pick three or four meals that I’m going to make throughout the week, go shopping and just have those ingredients on hand,” says Neville. “Once I actually started doing it, my life was so much easier because I have my go-to meals. I know what I’m going to make.”
SHOP TIME: Establishing weekly menus once a month will not only maximize your prep time but you’ll be able to watch out for sales to ease your grocery bills.

Have a back up
Maybe it’s traffic or a late night meeting; whatever the reason, sometimes life gets in the way. If you find you’ve run out of time for the meal you intended to cook, it pays to have what Neville calls an emergency recipe ready to go. According to Neville, if you give it some thought you likely have about three or four go-to recipes that can easily be made from ingredients that are right in your pantry.

STOCK TIME: Get in the habit of keeping key staples on hand so you’ve got at least one or two meals that can easily be prepared – instead of calling the pizza guy.

Swimming

So, I am training for my very first Triathlon and have been practicing my swimming. I am not a very strong swimmer and my form is not very good. However, I am getting myself in the pool and trying. I am finding it more difficult than I first thought. I really do not like my face in the water and I constantly have the feeling I am going to drown. I really have to give credit to all the swimmers out there, this is really much harder than I ever thought. Hopefully I make it through the swim during the triathlon and finish so that I can get on the bike.

My First Duathlon

Well I finally did a duathlon and lived through it....My husband is a triathlete and does IronMan competitions so he is in great shape, I on the other hand work out but do not compete so it was different for me. I was very nervous about the transitions periods thinking I might take too long to get my road bike shoes off or that I might just fall off of my bike trying to unclip before dismount. I am pretty new at riding a road bike so it was a big concern for me. Thankfully I was able to dismount without any problems. I had a pretty good bike ride and my run was about average I guess. I finsihed in 8th place for my age group (really shocked me). My time was 1 hour and 15 minutes - not bad for my very first event. I estimated I would finish in about 1 hour and 30 minutes. I am really proud that I finished the event and to my surprise I had a great time. My daughter Melinda did the event with me along with her friend Marina - both of them finished as well. I am very proud of them - they did not have any notice at all, I asked them if they wanted to do it without just 4 days before the event. I will definately do another Triathlon and so is my daughter. We are both signing up for the Pacific Grove Triathlon in September. This time we actually have some time to train.
