Bouncing Back from Pregnancy

By Carolina Diaz-Bordon
Pregnancy and overwhelming emotions go hand in hand. While intense feelings of joy, excitement and anticipation begin to grow inside you, so does a plethora of fears, anxieties and worries. Dr. Sheri Lerner, author of Bouncing Back from Pregnancy knows firsthand how stressful it is to see not only your figure, but your whole life transform before your very eyes.

After years of getting accustomed to the virtues of following a healthy lifestyle for her own soundness, Dr. Lerner, had to learn how to make her healthy manner of living fit for two. Her whole life was going through a complete metamorphosis. Her current priorities went out the window, her daily routines were kicked to the curb and her slim fitting wardrobe was pushed to the back of the closet. While she was ecstatic about the beautiful bundle of joy blossoming inside of her, she was also terrified that her healthy body would not be able to bounce back to its old self ever again. Dr. Lerner turned to spiritual guidance for answers.

Using the principles from the Body by God program developed by her husband, New York Times best-selling author Dr. Ben Lerner, Dr. Sheri Lerner learned how to adjust to all the new challenges and changes she was facing, stay healthy throughout her pregnancy, deliver a beautiful baby girl into the world and bounce back from pregnancy to her healthy fit figure once again.

“Mostly what inspired me was the fear I had while I was pregnant. I have friends with several kids that bounced back and look really good. Then, you see some women who don’t take any of the weight off or struggle with that last 10 or 15 pounds. Once I was able to do it and figured out a healthy way to do it, I just figured it would be a really great tool for women. Not just for diet and exercise but also for stress management and time management. With little ones running around, it is really critical for people to keep their lives in order,” Dr.Lerner tells eDiets in this exclusive interview.

Although Dr. Lerner has been reaping the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle for some time now, fear and insecurity were once a big part of her life. In Bouncing Back from Pregnancy, Dr. Lerner shares her story and the principles behind overcoming these self-doubts.

“I was a gymnast growing up and got weighed every single day of my life for about ten years. So, I’m in the extreme end of the scale of being really self-conscious,” she notes. “One of the things that really helped me when I was pregnant was that it made me really appreciate how I looked before I was pregnant. If I was going to bounce back in a healthy way and be able to continue to give my newborn baby, Nicole, healthy breast milk, I was just going to have to be patient and know that I was going to do it with time.”

Her main mission is to see a healthier world. Together with her husband, she wants to inspire others to achieve their highest potential when it comes to health. “We really have a goal just to reach out to others and to see people just living a much better lifestyle and receiving much greater gifts,” says Dr. Lerner.

The book is broken down into several different parts, each focusing on health before during and after the pregnancy: Dealing with the transformation while you’re pregnant, Fueling for Bouncing Back (diet and nutrition), Moving for Bouncing Back (exercise), Stress Management by God for Moms and Time Management by God for Moms.

According to Dr. Lerner, good health starts in the womb. You have the power to stay in health and start your baby off on the right foot from the moment you become pregnant. What you eat is what nourishes and helps your baby to grow while in utero. So, if you’re eating toxic things then you are allowing your baby to grow up with toxic chemicals.

No matter how big your belly is at the time, the best diet, according to Dr. Lerner, is the one God intended.

“Food by God is food that grows naturally that isn’t processed. It isn’t made with chemicals or in a laboratory,” notes Dr. Lerner. “The rule that I always tell people to help them figure this out is that Food by God will spoil or go bad if you don’t use it. The food in your refrigerator or shelf that is usually sitting there for weeks on end is usually food by man.”

Dr. Lerner believes that taking the proper steps to care for yourself during the pregnancy is not only beneficial to your health and the health of your baby, but it is also the most important step you can take to restore your figure after the birth.

“Having a good positive attitude is real important to staying healthy. I required much more rest then I did prior to being pregnant. I experienced a lot of fatigue. Good nutrition, being gentle with yourself, resting and also exercising while you’re pregnant is extremely important.

“How quickly you bounce back depends on how committed you are to getting back into shape. I know that for me that Nicole was born in February, and I was able to take a comfortable trip to the beach by May,” Dr. Lerner says.

In Bouncing Back from Pregnancy, Dr. Lerner takes you step by step and teaches you how to deal with all the critical phases and circumstances you will face to help you bounce back to your pre-pregnancy body more quickly. The book is designed to help guide and remind you how vital it is to nurture yourself so that you can take better care of the ones you love.
