A 24-year-old San Francisco man is dead after being attacked by a shark while surfing off Mexico's southern Pacific coast.
Mexican authorities said the man bled to death Monday after a gray shark bit his right thigh, leaving a 15-inch wound.
The victim was identified as Adrian Ruiz, NBC11 reported. The U.S. embassy in Mexico could not immediately confirm the man's name. Local authorities said he was a 24-year-old who was surfing with a fellow American. The other man was not injured. Shark attacks are relatively rare in Mexico. In 2006, the International Shark Attack File at the Florida Museum of Natural History reported only one attack in Mexico, which was not fatal. Last week, a retired veterinarian and triathlete, Dr. Dave Martin, died after being bitten once by a shark at Solana Beach, Calif.. "He died doing what he liked, surrounded by his friends, in a place he loved. Even through our grief this gives us an inner peace," said his son Jeff Martin on Sunday. "No one in their wildest dreams ever saw that happening. People would ask us about sharks and we'd just laugh and say, we're in Solana Beach. Doesn't happen here." He said the place where his father's life ended has always been a sacred place for the family. And despite the weekend warning to stay out of the water, Jeff Martin said he went surfing the day after the attack. Donation to the Dave Martin Memorial Fund will be accepted at 1st Pacific Bank of California at the Solana Beach Branch located at 937 Loma Santa Fe Drive.
