10 Heart Healthy Foods

The best heart healthy diet should consist of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytochemicals and fiber. You should also try to select foods that have zero or very little trans fat and saturated fats.

If you want a healthy heart, eating right isn't the only thing you need to do. Lifestyle plays a key role in heart health so if you are a smoker, drink alcohol, sleep less than 8 hours per night, and do not exercise regularly then you need to kick those bad habits to the curb.

It's time to make a change for the better and here are some foods to help you get started.

1) Berries - Blueberries, strawberriies, raspberries and red grapes

2) Whole Grains - Breads, oatmeal and cereals (low sugar)

3) Nuts - Almonds, pecans and walnuts

4) Soy Foods - Soy beans, soy bean oil and tofu

5) Olive oil - replace your veggie oil with this heart healthy choice

6) Beans - Pintos, garbanzos, lentils, kidney beans and chickpeas

7) Fish (High Omega 3) - Salmon, mackeral and tuna

8) Fruits & Veggies - Broccoli, spinach and grapefruit

9) Margarine - Those fortified with stanols or sterols

10) Tea - Green and black teas
